  • Gentle Evaporation of Temperature Sensitive Samples

    Posted by - August 10, 2009 19:39

John Morris Scientific are pleased to introduce Martin Christ’s Rotational Vacuum Concentrators.

Rotation vacuum concentration (or centrifugical evaporation) is used for evaporation, drying, purification and concentration of liquid samples.

Rotational vacuum concentration is an alternative to distillation systems, rotary evaporators and freeze–drying systems. Distillation systems and rotary evaporators use high temperatures which can damage sensitive samples. Freeze-drying systems operate at low temperatures and high vacuum levels. Although sublimation (the direct transformation from frozen solid to steam) protects the sample, it is time consuming and the technology rather expensive.

Rotational vacuum concentrators offer a method between rotary evaporation and freeze drying. In rotational vacuum concentration, the sample solvent is evaporated at a low temperature, low pressure and without having to be frozen. There is little thermal strain on the sample, which is important when working with thermally sensitive biological or clinical substances. The material is rotated at a moderate centrifugal speed of 1.350 to 1.550 min-1 The resulting force prevents the sample from spitting or bumping and reduces the risk of cross contamination if multiple samples are concentrated. The solvent can be collected for re-use or disposal in either cold traps of the concentrator or emission condensers of the connected vacuum system.

Martin Christ has a range of Rotational Vacuum Concentrators:

    - The RVC 2-18 CD Mini concentrator is an inexpensive and compact personal concentrator suitable for smaller sample volumes and is often used for DNA/RNA work.

    - The RVC 2-25 CD is a middle sized, table top concentrator for routine concentration of small to mid size sample volumes. A dedicated HCL version is available for work with strong acids.

    - The RVC 2-33 CD Maxi concentrator is a multipurpose system for large volumes with practically all types of solvents.

    - The new RVC 2-33IR is a high performance concentrator for shorter drying times and large volumes. The new product sample temperature sensor has wireless signal transmission which allows precise control and documentation of the sample temperature.

Martin Christ concentrators feature a maintenance-free, hermetically sealed magnetic drive system which prevents hydrocarbon contamination of your sample. Options include cold traps (2 or 4L) for increased evaporation performance and higher solvent recovery rates as well as automated vacuum control solutions for best performance and most gentle sample handling.

    Jaw Crusher For Pre-Cushing Materials

    Posted by - August 8, 2009 01:23

Fritsch’s Pulverisette 1 Jaw Crusher is the perfect tool wherever large pieces of brittle samples have to be prepared for analysis.

The Jaw Crusher crushes brittle samples with a maximum size of 95 mm down to 1-15 mm.

The Pulverisette 1 crushes the sample in an enclosed chamber under high pressure between two jaws, one fixed and the other a cam-driven crushing jaw. The crushed material leaves the machine through the gap between the jaws which can be adjusted.

Further particle size reduction can be achieved by combining the Jaw Crusher and a Grinding Mill in one system. In a relatively short processing time this combination can reduce material to a fineness of 0.1 mm.

The Jaw Crusher has a high power 2.2 kW motor that is overload protected. The drive system is designed to handle even the hardest materials. To prevent contamination of the sample by the grinding tool the Pulverisette 1 Jaw Crusher offers five different materials for crushing jaws and support walls.

A Completely New Modular Chemistry Tool

    Posted by - August 8, 2009 00:03

Syrris has introduced a high performance multipurpose synthesis system for research and development chemists, the Atlas. The Atlas offers a modular solution for a range of functions including heating, stirring, cooling and automated reagent addition.

The Atlas can adopt a wide range of different system configurations:

The Lithium system automates reactions in round bottomed flasks or vials and is equipped with a Hotplate and Stacking Dry Bath. Flasks from 50ml to 1 litre can be heated up to 280°C while the exterior surface remains cool to the touch. The Lithium allows users to edit and run profiles automatically from the base to control heating, cooling, stirring and reagent addition.

The Sodium system automates reactions in round bottomed flasks and is equipped with a hotplate (or Hot & Coldplate), magnetic stirrer and a Scorpion Overhead Stirrer for viscous reactions. The Stacking Dry Bath enables heating of round bottom flasks from 50ml to 1 litre up to 280°C

The Potassium system is designed for chemists who perform reactions in jacketed reactors. Integrated temperature and circulator control from the base unit make reactions easier. The Potassium is equipped with a scorpion Overhead Stirrer and 250ml round bottom Jacketed Vessel which can be substituted if required.

The pH Monitoring and Control systems are ideal for chemists who perform pH sensitive reactions. The pH system is based on the Potassium although the temperature node is replaced with a combined pH & temperature node and a pH probe allowing the Atlas to monitor both reaction temperature and pH. The pH system is equipped with a Syringe pump and can be configured to control the pH of a reaction by adding either acid and/or base as necessary to maintain a set pH value. The pH system can be operated from the Base Unit or via the Atlas Software.

The Remote Mount is designed for chemists who perform reactions in jacketed vessels. The Remote Mount allows a vessel to be mounted onto laboratory scaffolding. The Mount adds functionality to existing Atlas Systems by increasing the maximum working volume to 5 litres and locating jacketed vessels away from the Atlas Base.

The Gravimetric Dosing system allows a defined mass of reagent to be pumped from a balance to the reactor by a controlled peristaltic pump. The mass flow rate can be defined, monitored and adjusted by using Atlas Software.

The Syringe Pump is a volumetric dosing system which consists of two syringes and can be configured into two refilling flows or one continuous flow. A choice of dosing modes allows simple additions or active control of parameters including pH and temperature.

Atlas Software is an easy to use application for control and analysis of experiments. Systems including stirrers, circulators, RTD’s, pumps, balances, flow meters etc. The Software controls Atlas hardware as well as devices from other manufacturers. Reactions are continuously monitored and graphed with easy to use alarms and emergency control.

    Rapid Ultra Centrifugal Mill

    Posted by - August 7, 2009 20:57

John Morris Scientific is pleased to introduce the new Pulverisette 14 for fast size reduction of medium-hard to soft materials or even for dispersion and homogenisation of dry samples.

The centrifugal mill ensures gentle but fast processing due to 2-step grinding. First, material with a max size of 2 cm is pre-crushed on impact with the rotor blades at high speed. In the second run it is ground between the rotor and the sieve ring down to a size of 0.08 mm. Variable speed between 20,000 and 6,000 rpm combined with the strongest drive on the market automatically adjust speed to the load and ensure unmatched speed stability for best milling results.

The centrifugal mill is specially suited for grinding of temperature-sensitive materials such as grains, resins and fertilizers. The extremely high rotor speed enables fast and effective grinding, drastically reducing thermal stress on the grinding material. Samples that are difficult to grind, such as plastics, can be ground to analytical fineness after embrittlement with liquid nitrogen.
